Honorable Mention Day of Reckoning Mac (R. D. McManes) I walk down the hall with alabaster walls, toward the staircase of smoke stained spindles, The scent of a fish sandwich lingers in stale thick air, remembrance of an offering liberated from a fast food chain two blocks east on the corner. I have no offering except the knocking of my knees and fear painted on my face, head down, eyes lifted, shuffling short steps, with a limp thrown in every few feet or so for sympathetic measure. I begin my ascent of the staircase, each upward step draws me closer to my final judgment place. The door stands before me, with gilded block letters antique clear cut glass doorknob and frosted wavy glass window. Sweaty palms dried hastily on genuine blended slacks, I turn the doorknob apprehensively and swing the creaky door in. A little white haired lady glares over bifocal lenses. “Name and number” she says and nods at an empty chair, fingering fly across a keyboard “Looks like your taxes have increased” the corner of her mouth arches in a twisted rendition resembling a human smile “Cash, check or blood” and I seriously consider the latter.
